Patrick Kane Did Something Stupid…And Suddenly, August Isn’t As Dull

By now, you’ve probably heard about Mike Modano-wannabe,  Patrick Kane assaulting that taxi driver in the wee hours of Sunday morning.  Why did Pat  and his cousin beat the poor man up?

Because the cabbie didn’t have 20 cents of change.

And just like that, Patrick Kane has given the world a leading candidate for Silliest Sports Crime of the year.  You’d think that EA’s new cover boy would have a little more common sense than he showed that morning.

I hope for the sake of this sport that the Kanes were drunk and not just stupid like a certain hockey player we know (see: Avery, Sean).  Hockey has lately only had publicity from things like sloppy seconds and divas wanting out of Ottawa.  In sports like basketball (which I despise) and football, those sorts of controversies are to be expected.  But hockey is different to me.  The players are more respectful and somewhat more intelligent than other athletes.

Well, now, Patrick Kane doesn’t have any of that going for him.  It wasn’t smart to attack a driver over 20 cents.  Not when you’re a superstar who makes big bucks and 20 cents is nothing.

Now, his career could be in jeapordy (did I spell that right??) now.  The Hawks will have to let Kane, Jonathan Toews, or Duncan Keith go next year, and this taxi altercation might help management in their decision.  I’m not really planning on seeing Patrick Kane with Chicago after this year.

Then, think about the present: US Olympic orientation camp is in a week, fittingly the same day that Kane is expected in court.  He’ll probably still make the team, but there’s always a chance that he won’t.  How inconvenient.

When the league gets ahold of this, it could result in a nice little suspension for Kane.  If it’s a 10-game suspension, then the Stars might actually have a chance of winning the game against Chicago on October 17.  Unless that stupid curse comes out again and Brenden Morrow gets broken again.  But hopefully that won’t happen.  I hope.

Grading the NHL Awards Fashion

I feel like being a critic, so I’m going to grade the guys’ fashion from the awards the other night.

First up, is Alex Ovechkin:

I like this one. :)

I like this one. 🙂

I love his tie.  I just like his entire outfit.  It’s an improvement from last year’s red tux thing.  I love that little smirk he’s got.  It makes him look even more studly than he already is.  I’m glad that he took home the Hart.  Is it just me, or did Geno look a litttle mad that Alex won the Hart?  I don’t know what that’s about, so whatevs.

Ovechkin Wins the Hart

So Ovie’s keepin’ the Hart.  Can’t say I’m surprised.  I thought it was a great show.  I thought it was hilarious how that big-time Mike Modano-wannabe, Patrick Kane struggled to open the envelope.  Poor kid looked really flustered.  I also thought it was funny when Tim Thomas asked Manny Fernandez if he should thank his wife for him.   I loved when Ovechkin said that Malkin’s English is better than Pavel Datsyuk’s.  Classic.  Datsyuk was hilarious as usual.  I know I should hate Datsyuk for being a Wing, but I love the guy; he’s a total stud.  I think it’s because he’s Russian.

Anyway, here’s the list of winners:

Hart- Alex Ovechkin

Lester B. Pearson- Alex Ovechkin

Selke- Pavel Datsyuk

Lady Byng- Pavel Datsyuk

Norris- Zdeno Chara

Adams- Claude Julien

Calder- Steve Mason

Vezina- Tim Thomas

And I think that’s all the important ones.

I thought it was silly of Ovechkin to say that the Caps would win the Cup next year when the Stars are obviously going to be the 2010 champs. Wink, wink. 😉

The End is Near…

Not that end, but the end of the 2008-2009 playoffs.  I don’t know what I’ll do with my life when there’s no more hockey. 😦  I gotta say, though, that these playoffs rocked.  A lot.

I LOVED that my favorite former Star, shootout assassin, Jussi Jokinen had an awesome postseason.  I love his nickname, “The Finnish-er.”  I almost passed out after I watched the last minute and a half of that Game 7 with New Jersey.  I definitely did not see that one coming.  But it rocked.  I wanted Carolina to win that series because of Juicy, but also because that was the only way we’d see the ultimate series:

Crosby vs. Ovechkin.

Before the playoffs even began, I figured out the only way that we could see Washington play Pittsburgh, and miraculously, it happened.  And that series is one I’ll never forget.  I triple-loved Game 2 when Ovechkin and Crosby both netted hat tricks.  “Anything you can do, I can do better…”  I rooted for the Caps to win the series, and I was initially heartbroken to see them lose the series, but it just wasn’t the year.

Then, of course, we got to see the league’s professional choke artists at their best.  Yep, after winning the President’s Trophy, the Sharks bowed out of the first round to the Sucks.  Gawd I hate Anaheim!  But I wasn’t all that surprised, honestly.  The Sharks just can’t raise their game when it matters.

In the West finals, I loved seeing Detroit own Patrick Kane and the Hawks.  I hate that kid.  He’s such a Mike Modano-wannabe.  Him and Bobby Ryan.

And in the Cup final, we’ve gotten to see a rematch of last year’s and the irony of ironies in Marian Hossa.  The series has been so intense for me, that I haven’t been able to eat on game day, and I’m shaking during the game.  I don’t even want to know what I’ll be like tonight in a winner-take-all Game 7.

It’s been  a great playoff year, and hopefully next year will be even better with the Stars involved and going far.  Stars for the 2010 Stanley Cup! 🙂
